One day we were sitting around thinking about the future and the fact that some day we will not be able to travel as easily as we do today, both abroad and domestically. We also would like to spend more time with the grand children and that is difficult when you live in a city and your home is not really setup as an entertainment environment for children. So the though of somewhere in the country with a water view was born.
We developed the criteria:
- Establish a budget
- Space where the kids can be kids with out fear of bothering the neighbors
- a pool or room for a pool
- a dock, not necessarily for a boat, but some where to fish and maybe launch a kayak
- a bunk house for the kids
- a master bedroom, and 2 guest rooms
We began our search looking for property to build, we visited the Northern Neck, Mathews and Gloucester counties, etc. Our conclusion was that the lots we found were either unacceptable of too expensive.
Next step looking a homes for sale. These ranged from a simple cottage to older farm house to all types of house in the rural landscape. We spent about 9-months on the overall search.
We found the perfect house in New Point Virginia, on Doctors Creek just off the Chesapeake Bay in Mathews County.

I just love it! It is a house with beautiful “bones” that will become an absolute showplace when you finish with it. I’ll be tracking the progress and relishing the changes that will make it better and better.
